Valentine's Day is already not my favorite holiday, but I also just get tired of hearing the same love songs over and over again. This year, I decided to make a playlist of my favorite love songs that are unique and fun. I hope you enjoy these as much as I do! Happy Valentine's Day weekend!
(The link to my playlist is at the bottom of this post)
"Wake me" by Bleachers
The only complaint I have against this song is that I wish it was longer. This song is down to earth, personal, and genuine. The line this song is named after, and my personal favorite line says, "If you're lonely, lonely, lonely, wake me." At the end of the day, we want someone willing to give up their own time, even their own sleep, to help us through our hard times.
"Trouble, Heartaches, and Sadness" by Ann Peebles
Don't be fooled by the title or the bluesy vibes. I promise this is actually a happy love song. Ann Peebles sings her heart out, yelling at "trouble, heartaches, and sadness" to leave her alone because she's found someone to love and she has no time for pain anymore. Whether or not we've found our one and only yet, we can all use a good song to chase away our sadness.
"Stuck on the Puzzle" by Alex Turner
If you saw my "Favorite Thing" feature on my home page for January, you will recognize this song. I honestly can't count how many times I've listened to it in the last few months. "Stuck on the Puzzle" gets me every time because it's just a guy singing about the confusion and adventure he experiences while falling in love with his dream girl. I've never met anyone that doesn't think love and relationships are confusing.
"Reflecting Light" by Sam Phillips
I first heard this song on an episode of Gilmore Girls which is one of my favorite shows of all times. It plays in Season 4:21 "Last week fights, this week tights" when Luke and Lorelai dance together at Liz and TJ's wedding. GILMORE GIRLS: A YEAR IN THE LIFE SPOILER: Then it symbolically plays in the last episode of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life when Luke and Lorelai finally get married. Everyone loves a lifetime love story full of symbolism.
"Put it Together" by Langhorne Slim
The piano in this song is so energetic. It's a very upbeat song about how he was broken, but his love helped him put his life back together. I would not suggest using a relationship to "fix" all your problems, but it is definitely nice to have someone there to help you heal and grow.
"Past Lives" by BORNS
I want to start with the fact that I don't believe in past lives or reincarnation. However, I like that this song is basically saying that all of his past lives have been leading up to this moment because he has finally found his true love and "destiny."
"Love you Most" by Laura Jean Anderson
This one has a hint of sadness in it because it talks about the possibility of having to leave each other and find someone else, but the real meaning of the song is sweet. Laura Jean Anderson is telling her love that there is no one else anywhere on earth that could love him more than she does.
"I Wear Glasses" by Mating Ritual
I accidentally made my roommate hate this song last year because I played it on repeat so often. This is probably the most unique love song of this list. The chorus is basically saying that everything he does is so he can love his person more. He sings, "I wear glasses so that I can see you better. I put shoes on so that we can walk together," and so on. This kind of devotion and all encompassing love is sweet and seems rare these days.
"Guru" by Coast Modern
Some people think they can't start a relationship until every part of their life is fixed. I think you should have some control and structure to your life before bringing someone else into it, but waiting until you're perfect will mean you're waiting forever. This song is about how his girlfriend is like his "guru" because she helps him make better decisions and live a happier life. My favorite line is, "Even if I'm slow, she's patient with the pace I grow." He's just trying his best and that's enough. We all need this kind of patience.
"Groceries" by Mallrat
This is a fun and carefree song. It's all about the beginning stages of liking someone. Not everyone needs a big fancy date, sometimes just chatting while going to the grocery store is enough. I also like this song because she says, "And if you wanna get close to me, just gimme some gimme some gimme some sign." Dating would be easier if we were all blunt about our emotions and intentions.
"Dog Years" by Maggie Rogers
The music in this song is very whimsical and flowy. Again, I don't believe in after lives, but I do like the prospect of a love that lasts "for all of time." I'm also just a big fan of Maggie Rogers' music in general.
"Cold Cold Man" by Saint Motel
I never get tired of Saint Motel's peppy sound and unique lyrics, but this song especially is one of my favorites. He is apologizing for the fact that he doesn't often compliment his girlfriend or tell her how he feels, but he is assuring her that she has nothing to worry about because he's never leaving. She's the only person worth spending his life with.
"Buttons" by meija
This song just came up on my Spotify last week, but I'm already obsessed with it. It's not the typical, gushy love song. Instead, he's telling his person that he loves her even when she pushes his buttons. No relationship is free from annoyance, but it's all about overcoming those little things and getting used to each other.
"Better Man" by Leon Bridges
If you ever find yourself in Dublin, Ireland, head on over to Tara Street and buy the best hot chocolate of your life at Shoe Lane Coffee. If you sit there long enough, I guarantee at least one Leon Bridges song will play. That is where I first heard his music this fall, and I've been in awe of his modern take on oldies style blues and love songs ever since. "Better Man" is all about wanting to improve himself for his baby. He's even willing to "swim the Mississippi river" if she'll just give him a chance.
"Atlas" by The Dip
While this song is complimentary of his girl, mostly the song is about how he sees how hard she works and how big her heart is, and he knows she just needs to rest every once in a while. He wants to take care of her and ease her burdens. This song's style is actually very similar to Leon Bridges' in the way that it reminds me of old jazz in all the best ways.
"All That I Needed" by Fremont
The vibe of this song is pretty chill and calming without it being a boring slow song. The lyrics are heart warming as well. My favorite line is, "With you by my side, I'm not so alone." He is singing throughout that she is what was missing from his life and now things are getting better.
Whatever your taste in music, I think these unique love songs can be a pleasant change in pace.
