Nothing Lasts Forever

If there is one thing 2020 taught me, it's that nothing lasts forever. Previously, I believed all the little details of life like hugs, routines, and classes were permanent simply because I'd gotten used to them. Like everyone else, COVID caused me to lose control of most areas of my life.

As much as I enjoy structure and consistency, I'm starting to realize that "nothing lasts forever" isn't always a bad thing. While it's terrifying to think that the aspects of life we've grown to love could be ripped right of our grasp at anytime, it's simultaneously comforting to remember that the bad times won't last forever, either.

Humans can't fully understand the concept of time. 2 Peter 3:8 says, "But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day" (NIV). To us, the difficult times we go through can feel never-ending. God does not show us the big picture, so we often can't tell if what we're going through is going to matter 10 years from now. In the moment, though, anything can feel like a big deal. Sometimes it really is a big deal.

The point is, the difficult times will change, too. Christmas is the perfect reminder of this. God's people waited for their savior for what seemed like forever. But the birth of Jesus was the proof that peace and salvation were coming.

Ecclesiastes 3 starts with a promise that life will bring many different seasons: some full of happiness and some full of pain. God will not put us through situations he can't get us through. When we are hopeless, he is our hope. When we are doubtful, he has the answers. When we feel trapped, he brings freedom. When we can not forgive ourselves, he forgives us yet again. Most importantly, when the world seemed lost forever, he sent his only son.

If you woke up this Christmas morning disappointed that it's the end of 2020 and you still haven't found what you're looking for, you're not alone. I hope you can still find peace in the knowledge that nothing lasts forever except the unconditional love and faithfulness of our Lord.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
